Anjali and I went to an opera this afternoon performed by the UK Opera department, called
Little Nemo in Slumberland. The opera was based on a classic comic from the early 1900's. The costumes were colorful and in keeping with the original comic, and they projected scenes from the original comic on the backdrop that added to the feel. But of course the star of an opera is the singing. I really enjoyed the large cast scenes where they layered melody-over-melody in quite dramatic and epic fashion. I also enjoyed getting to see the live orchestra playing so close, as we were in Row F. I think most everyone's favorite character was the sassy sunshine woman in her sunshine crown and orange draping robe. Anjali I'm sure mainly enjoyed interacting with folks in attendance before and after, who admired her flamboyant outfit. She says her favorite part was "everything," although she seemed pretty giddy to see the young man who played Nemo afterward. ; )
We've had Mary Poppins as a theme in our lives lately ~ having watched the film twice, and listening to the soundtrack pretty often. It was thrilling to get to see live performers doing their thing.
Nervous before the show!
Samples of the original comic on the brochure.
